Kommentar: Hello devote Tomcat finatics; I must tell you
the pride that fills my heart to see the son of one of the greatest mentors
on our planet; usher in a new era for VF-143. I speak of Steve"WEB"Koehler
current C.O. of now VFA-143 In the early '80's while still matureing. Steve's
Father Tom "Joker"Koehler(C.O. VF-161) took me under his wing and introduced
me to this addicting habit of Naval Aviation. As hard as I tried, I did not
make the cut to NO ONE's fault but my own. Steve, however, who I last saw
at my Mother's funeral in 1983, just didn't seem to want to go the Blue Water
Ops way. I was soooooo wrong and now Steve has not only achieve all that
I dreamed of; and more, but ushers in a new era for his unit as his Father
did before him. I send my love, prayers and thanks to Steve"Web" Koehler,
for fulfilling the honor for which I could not muster; and for raising the
family worthy of defending the honor and freedom that many of us take for
granted. I haven't seen you since Janurary of 1983, bt Steve my spirit is
with you; my thanks goes with you everytime you blast off the bow; thank
you for doing what I had not the strength to do. With all my honor as a free
man; Matthew Sherwood

ago, I never had an inclination to write. However, it seems a quick note
of Thanks is appropriate. After being trained as an AQ (Fire Control/Radar)
on the F-14 in the Navy, followed by a 4 year Naval Career at VF-51, I was
honorably discharged as an AQ2. Immediately went to work for Grumman, also
at NAS Miramar, installing a variety of modifications beginning with the
Television Camera System (TCS) mods. Though it has been many years since
I swapped a box (so many 710's) or an antenna, I still get heart palpitations
just thinking about this beautiful bird. Many Thanks for an excellent site.
Considering the fact you never even worked with the F-14, it is amazing that
you have authored a site with such obvious love and admiration for this most
excellent bird. Those of us who had long, personal relationships with the
F-14 are definitely indebted to you for your thorough research and countless
hours of hard work in creating your site. I certainly hope you realize how
much we all appreciate your dedication. Again, Many Thanks!!! Malcolm Dickson

Kommentar: hi
torsten! great website! i first ran into your website in 1997, and it's
been a part of my life since. may you never take down your website. i got
into the F-14 Tomcat when I was 5 when i watched Top Gun. The star of Top
Gun was Grumman's plane not Tom Cruise, as i'm sure you'll agree. when i
was 14, i moved to the USA and my interest in military aircraft was re-shaped,
particularly for US Navy aircraft. to start on my interest, i visited the
CV-11 USS Intrepid museum. as i'm sure you are aware by now, that is the
final resting place of the famous F-14B Prototype. other cool USN aircraft
on the CV-11 are the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, North American A-5 Vigilante, the
Grumman A-6 Intruder prototype (or one of), the Grumman YA-6F Intruder II
Prototype, the LTV A-7 Corsair II, Chance Vought F-8 Crusader, a Lockheed
SR-71 Black Bird, a McDonnell F-4 Phantom II, Grumman F-11 Tiger, McDonnel
F-3 Demon and i think that's about it. summer of that year before i started
school, we visited Tomcat Alley itself, NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach Virginia.
It was a blast. First, while i was walking around the beach, i saw an F-14
flying high in the sky, i couldn't believe myself. later on, we found out
there was a bus tour to go inside the NAS although you could not step out
of the bus. fair enough, i got some good photos of VF-31, VF-32, VF-143 and
VF-213 F-14s. I just wish i was able to get a photo of a VF-2 F-14 but i
guess i was pushing my luck. there was just too many to take photos of all
of them, but the best F-14 there was the CAG of VF-31. NAS Oceana also has
a cool museum park. There you can see a very weird F-14. it's an F-14 with
both VF-11 and VF-143 markings. i don't know if they've changed it since
but i have a lot of cool shots of it. also in the park is a McDonnel Douglas
F/A-18 Hornet, an A-6E Intruder (T.R.A.M.), a Grumman F-9 Panther, a Douglas
F4D Skyray, a F-4 Phantom II in VF-102 markings, and an F-8 Crusader in VF-101
fictitious markings. i don't remember if there was a McDonnel F2H Banshee.
it was truly a great way to end summer before i started high school. i
have several books on the F-14, but i doubt that they are as many as yours.
if it's ok, could you tell me if a book called Tomcat Alley is still in print?
that was the last one i've been meaning to get. my favorite book is the Shipbourne
Superfighter hardcover one published by World Airpower Journal. i also have
some out of print ones like F-14 Tomcat in Action published by Squadron/Signal,
but honestly, i don't even remember how i got it. haha. christmas of that
same year, i was able to go back to NAS Oceana but this time the experience
was different. this time the bus tours were out of season, but i got something
good out of it anyway. i met an F-14 Pilot in person. i don't remember his
rank but i think he was a Lt., his name was Rick LaBranche, callsign Twig.
you may have seen him in the Discovery Channel special "Carrier: Fortress
at Sea", when he was one of the last men to take the A-6 Intruder to its
final cruise. Twig was true to his word in the film when he said he would
be transitioning to the F-14D. he showed me around the hangar and i saw an
F-14 B or was it a D being serviced. unfortunately, due to wartime restrictions
he could only give us 5 minutes of his time but it was cool. well i just
wanted to share my F-14 story with you. it's really a shame what the US Navy
has done to the F-14, butchering the F-14D and all. well, see you later.

the pilot of 161157 on April 24, 1981 at NAS Oceana when my right engine
compressor stalled at rotation during t/o and we lost that beautiful jet.
It had only about 210 total flt hrs on it. Virtually a new aircraft. My RIO
was LCDR Robert "Bobo" Kimmel. I noted that the squadron listed is VF-32.
Actually, that was a VF-101 aircraft. The flight was supposed to be a 2 v
2 air combat manuvering training flight with a couple of F-15's from Langley
up the coast. If you would like more of the details, let me know. I'd be

Kommentar: The F-14As and AIM-54 Phoenix are gone for
good as of last September 2004, but the remaining B- and D-model Tomcats
will serve with the Tomcat squadrons on the East Coast until 2006. Tomcat
operations on the West Coast are over... They've transitioned to the Super
Hornet or deactivated Tomcat squadrons. The retirement was moved up from
2010 to save money on maintenance costs. The Navy will be very hard-pressed
to scrounge medium-range attack capability out of its remaining strike fighter
assets until the F-35C becomes operational in 2012-2014...

1974-78. Need to point out the fact that there is no way that they could
have celebrated 10 years of accident-free operation in 1979. Lew Kosich and
I lost an aircraft over the side during the N. Atlantic cruise on 14 September
1976 after run-away throttles prior to catapult hook up. We both ejected
and subsequently landed back on deck after a wild ejection ride. Shipboard
video of the accident has been featured on an A&E Wings segment entitled
“Top Gun,” and I understand it was for a time used in ejection training videos
as part of annual requal. Good job on the site. Les Seymour

Kommentar: It
has been said that there is a need for a more modern replacement for the
USAF A-10s. I believe with a major "rework" of the F-14 by up grade of engines
& possible vectored thrust, increasing wing area with modified outboard
wings, addition of "fast-packs" to increase fuel capacity & place ment
of either Gau-8 30mm gatlin or a "Bushmaster-chain gun" housed in an underbelly
bulge faring area between the engines simular to fast-pack configuration,
Use of composite-Kevlar & lightweight titanium armored panels & "skin"
to upgrade ballistic protection, placement of a ballistic point defence at
the center/rear between engine exaust simular to the old army "Claymore"
mine system firing steel ball projectiles rearward as a last chance point
defence against incoming missles along with regular chaff & flares, and
last but not least appropiate avionics & weapons hard-points & weapons
systems & electronics upgrades. You might say that it would be cheaper
to build such an aircraft from scratch. But since the basic air frame of
the F-14 is an already proven superb military aircraft, with plenty of room
to incorperate the changes wanted, WHY NOT BUILD THEM ? ? ? The advantages
to such an aircraft are plain to see! For example: swing wing design alowing
for low speed & loiter performance and high speed supersonic performance,
increased feul capacity for longer range & loiter time, improved carrier
operation capability with thrust vectoring, FASTER responce time to target
from loiter, vastly improved performance capacity & survivablity over
current ground attack aircraft from air to air attack, and increased crew
& aircraft protection systems survivabilty equal to & way beyond
the current A-10s in USAF use. Please let me Know what you think GOD BLESS
AMERICA! Sam T. Mullins

Kommentar: Happy Christmas and New Year's to everybody!
Latest word that I read on the Tomcat is that all the A-models have been
retired as of this past September 2004... The AIM-54 missile has also been
retired and is no longer employed on any Tomcats remaining in service. (Yeah,
the last cruise of the F-14A and Phoenix were announced on the site before,
but the September date is very official. None of the Tomcats the public
saw in "The Final Countdown" and "Top Gun" are left in service.) Since the
AIM-120 was never incorporated into frontline Tomcats, the longest range
missile now available to the F-14B/D is the latest model of the AIM-7 Sparrow.
There are approximately 80 B and D models still left in service. As of
about a year ago, there's supposedly no more testing being done with the
type and the NF-14Ds have been retired to the boneyard (Davis-Monthan Air
Force Base in Arizona) or are on their way to bases or museums as gateguards
along with the F-14As, Bs, and Ds already retired... Supposedly, the retirement
date of the remaining Tomcat models (B/Ds) has also been pushed up to late
2005 according to a British military aviation magazine. (It might have been
Air Forces International.) Apparently, the bean counters in the USN are
anxious to retire the type as soon as possible. No question that nobody
that likes the plane wants to see it go, but the facts are that the airframes
are getting older, are increasingly harder to maintain without new F-14 airframes
being produced, and it's not guaranteed that the oldest airframes (15-years-plus)
will continue to hold up well. There were probably a few years back with
a critical bolt breaking in the landing gear and the flight control systems
failing in several Tomcats causing several planes to be lost. Remember that
every piece of military equipment in the US arsenal has been pushed especially
hard since the 1990s and retirement dates are coming up faster for a lot
of aircraft types besides the older Tomcats. Newer aircraft types like
the JSF and F-22 can't come online soon enough because a lot of the older
F-16s, F-18s, and the remaining stocks of F-14s and F-15s are literally wearing
out or falling apart. For example, the bulk of the F-16s in Air Force service
have accumulated over 5000 hours flying time apiece(!) and the Air Force
is facing the prospects of reducing its air wings further OR structurally
strengthening the fatigued airframes to keep them in service longer... Not
an inexpensive proposition.

memories. i was stationed at nas oceana from 81 to 83 and onboard the uss
nimitz from 83 to 85. i worked in A.I.M.D. i performed c.e.r. and hot section
inspections on the tf30 p414a engines. and to this day i still know every
nut, bolt and wire on that engine . i also worked in the test cell where
they test our work and have seen things that would blow your mind. at zone
5 full after burner the tomcat engine turns 20,000 gallons of baffle cooling
water into pure steam which can be seen for miles and god forbid if your
standing anywhere near the J.B.D's (jet blast deflectors) during highpower
cuz it will rattle your eyeballs out of your head , numb your face and itch
every nose hair till you cant stand it anymore . AAHhh. i miss the good
ole days. brings a tear to my eye. also did you know that when testing the
tf30 off the fantail of the nimitz the ship speed would increase an incriment
of 1 knot. and talk about air shows. youll never see fighters perform over
land like they do over water. this is a great website and ill be sure to
pass it along.

is good at hollywood movie only, such as ID4 movie, for its futuristic shape
but F-14 is the best ever fighter. I dont think your F-18 could win againts
SU-27, not to mention SU-30. See how your Maverick works. The F-14 is even
still better than The Eagle. The Cat was to fight sea-air-land but The Eagle
has been enough only from land - air - land. To sum up To kill this Cat it
takes one SU-27, EFA and Rafale to work together in the air. So let this
Cat stand on deck again. Wake up guys. Where have all of you been?

the best Fighter Aircraft in the world and it is a shame to have my goverment

Kommentar: I took in an F14D demo flight at a local airshow
recently, with the types imminent retirement, it's probably the last time
I get to see it. I'm going to miss that big honkingly powerfull, fast
jet. It turns on a dime, accellerates like stink, and dives like a sledge
hammer welded to sewer cover. As I felt the power in my chest durring
the final roaring fly past, I stuggled to keep the F14 in sight as it climbed,
fighting to hold back the tears welling up in my eyes. The Navy, Pentagon
and DOD in my estimation caved to politics, sold out, lock stock and barrel,
and turned their backs on the best interests of the service and the countries
defence, when they made the huge mistake of selecting the inherently inferior
F18 platform for further development, in favour of more advanced versions
of the F14. And so here we are, and maybe next year I can look forward
to seeing an F18E/F, with the with all it's touted "capability" and areodynamic
performance that has more in common with a 30 year old A7, or A4, than
the mighty F14D or any F15s. I'll miss both them terribly, when they go,
as well, with nothing else realisticaly (the Raptor appears to be still
born on arrival and probably rightly so) on the horizon to replace either
type. God Bless you guys, keep the faith, F14s forever, baby ! We shall
never forget. MaX
